Year 5 pupils at St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Stockton have made an excellent start to the new academic year, demonstrating enthusiasm and determination in their mathematics lessons.
As part of their first maths topic, the children have been exploring place value and developing a deeper understanding of numbers through a range of practical and engaging activities.
Bringing Numbers to Life
Using a variety of manipulatives, pupils have been learning how to read, write and represent numbers in different ways. These hands-on resources have helped children build confidence while strengthening their understanding of key mathematical concepts.
Working collaboratively with their classmates, pupils have also enjoyed practising saying numbers aloud and discussing their ideas with learning partners.
Exploring Larger Numbers
As their confidence has grown, Year 5 pupils have progressed to working with increasingly larger numbers, including numbers in the millions.
The challenge has encouraged children to apply their place value knowledge and develop greater fluency when reading and interpreting large numbers.
